“Under the spreading chestnut tree, I sold you and you sold me.”
Happy Saturday everyone! Today we return to the fictional island of Saint-Marie, home of bloody murder and unlikely motives, for another exciting murder mystery courtesy of DI Richard Poole, chronic Englishman and sceptic.
This time, the wife of one of Poole’s old colleagues is murdered (“strangled by her own scarf”, Poole notes, as if this was somehow deeply ironic when it happens all the time in Murder Mystery Land) and there is tension in Paradise as said old colleague puts pressure on him to find the murderer.
Also, it appears that the ARC from Primeval has set up a covert base on Saint-Marie as both Abby (Hannah Spearritt, otherwise known as Hannah From S-Club) and Stephen (James Murray) appear as British ex-pats running a holiday home business. And, now I come to think of it, Poole (Ben Miller) himself is obviously James Lester in disguise. Wow. The world needs to know this.
Science fiction geekery aside, this was an episode on the usual model. Murder, red herrings, Agatha Christie-style Clues with a capital C, amazingly complicated motive. And, of course, everything’s fine in the end. The world is as it should be once again. (Or is it?)
