Dispatches: Weight Watchers: How They Make Their Millions

“Do I dare
Disturb the universe?”

TS Eliot

Today, a Channel 4 documentary about Weight Watchers. Why? I hear you cry. Why is the English Student watching this? Well, corporate deception is a very interesting subject. It’s like Derren Brown but on a national scale.

Dispatches was looking into the question of whether Weight Watchers actually works. The answer, of course, is “no”. It turns out that Weight Watchers products are considerably more expensive than normal products and almost certainly no better for you; that most people put all the weight they’ve managed to lose in the short term back on in the long term; and that Weight Watchers meetings are basically sales opportunities.

None of this should come as a surprise. But it’s quite fun to watch the expressions on people’s faces when they realise they’ve been fobbed off. And, like I said, what could be more interesting than corporate deception?

(PS. Apologies for the brevity of this post, but I’m quite busy today.)
